Why We Started Biowrap: Our Journey Toward a Sustainable Aotearoa

For two decades, we worked in the building industry, and we saw a lot of things. One thing that always stood out, though, was the sheer amount of plastic waste. You’d watch it pile up in landfills, knowing it would likely sit there for hundreds of years. We knew we had to do something and that’s where the idea for Biowrap Sustainable Aotearoa was born: a simple but powerful mission to reduce that plastic waste for future generations.

We knew plastic wasn’t going away anytime soon—it’s too useful. And while recycling is absolutely crucial, we also know the reality: a significant amount of plastic still ends up in landfills. We decided to find a better solution for those products that don’t get recycled.

The Biowrap Solution: A Partnership for Progress

To tackle this challenge, we partnered with Biogone, a company at the forefront of sustainable plastic technology. This partnership allows us to bring you innovative, cutting-edge plastic wrap that not only performs like traditional wrap but also offers a powerful new advantage: it’s landfill biodegradable.

Our products are designed to be better from every angle:

  • Recyclable: They can be recycled where facilities exist, just like traditional plastics.
  • Made from recycled plastics: Where possible, we use recycled plastics to reduce our footprint from the very beginning.
  • Landfill Biodegradable: The real game-changer. Our products are designed to break down in years or decades, not centuries.

Landfill Biodegradable: The Missing Piece of the Puzzle

This is where the magic happens. We’ve added a special additive that gives our plastics a second life after their first one is over. The additive ensures our products will biodegrade in microbe-rich environments like landfills.

Here’s how it works: the additive attracts microorganisms, which consume the plastic and convert it into natural byproducts like water and organic matter. In a landfill, this process is particularly useful because the plastic’s stored energy is converted into biogas which is a hummus type substance and can be captured and used by landfill operators as a clean energy resource.

This isn’t a gimmick—this has been rigorously tested and certified by independent laboratories. We’re proud to offer a solution that makes a tangible difference by reducing long-term waste and creating value from it.

At Biowrap, we’re driven by a simple mission: to help build a more sustainable future for New Zealand. We believe that by providing smarter, more effective products, we can all play a part in tackling plastic waste.
